ABC Stage 67, an anthology show that began in September of 1966, attracted top talent throughout its one season, but failed in the ratings completely. Not only did it attract top actors, it attracted top writers like playwright Murray Schisgal, Truman Capote (adapted by Eleanor Perry), Stanley Mann, Arthur Laurents, James Goldman, Earl Hamner, Jr., and top directors like Sam Peckinpah, Franklin Schaffner, Ted Kotcheff, Paul Bogart, Joe Layton, Frank Perry, and more, not to mention top musical theater folks like Stephen Sondheim, Bock and Harnick, Bacharach and David, Jule Styne and Comden and Green, and Richard Adler.
 
Which brings us to the star-studded Rodgers and Hart Today, a kind of variety show episode and arrangements suited to 1966 (then known as “today”). Producer Richard Lewine and a bold idea – no host, no talking, one unit set and jumping from one number to the next, only stopping for commercials. And when I say star-studded, the cast included Bobby Darin, Petula Clark, The Mamas and the Papas, Count Basie and his band, The Supremes, dancer Peter Genarro, and Doodletown Pipers. The songs, of course, are brilliant and the musical director was Quincy Jones. The performances are great fun and the show zips along, never overstaying its welcome. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
 
As a bonus, we include the songs from the musical The Canterville Ghost, which aired on November 2, 1966. The teleplay was by Burt Shevelove, and the score was by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. While the songs were poorly recorded and mixed, it’s still fun to hear them, although aside from pop star Peter Noone, none of the other cast were ever going to have major singing careers – Michael Redgrave, Natalie Schafer, and Tippy Walker (she’d made a splash in the film The World of Henry Orient). The songs are tuneful and cute, just don’t expect She Loves Me or Fiddler on the Roof. The musical director and orchestrator was none other than the brilliant John Morris.
 
James Nelson, our wonderful mastering engineer, has done his usual great work getting these lost gems to sound as good as they’re ever going to sound and, as you’ll hear, that’s pretty damn good.
